If I wanted to justify my purchase, I wouldn't go and buy an A7r3 five months after I bought GFX. But camera / design and usability is a bit of shame at this price point. The ISO standard is based on middle grey rendering, so it's always a stumbling block when trying to discuss ETTR (which is the implication of what you're saying), and what 'correct' exposure is. "MF definitely is better than FF, but current offerings suggest GFX is for niche application." The next generation of GFX cameras that fuji will release soon will be 100MP and more. If you compare sensor size differences..FF vs M4/3 = 4:1(300%)FF vs APS-C = 2.25:1(125%)MF vs FF = 1.68:1(68%)So indeed, the sensor size difference between MF(44x33) and FF is considerably smaller than that between FF and smaller sensors. Id say this is fuji's attempt at getting some of the smaller than apsc market who balk at full frame but....ok, really, are you going to start arguing that m43 market better than medium format now? Medium format shines in prints, with the smooth tonal gradations and overall richness. See for yourself. We've got our hands on a full-production copy of Fujifilm's GF 50mm F3.5 "pancake" prime lens for their medium-format GFX system. Wait, I've been typing for 45 seconds. FF and MF are not world's apart, they're almost equal/indistinguishable. Think of the sensor size on Fuji GFX, Hasselblad X1D and Pentax 645 as crop-sensor medium format, because that’s what it really is. Fujifilm's GFX 50R takes the image quality from the existing 50S model and wraps it in a new body with new controls and a lower price of entry. Both the GFX 50R and the X-Pro3 are mirrorless interchangeable lens cameras that are based on a medium format (GFX 50R) and an APS-C (X-Pro3) sensor. Man that S5Pro was great in the day. LCD Monitor. Sure but you’ll have people who will say the GFX isn’t a worthwhile upgrade because it’s 1/2 to 2/3 stop improvement over full frame in one breath and the one stop improvement full frame gives you over APSC is totally worth it. By the way, if the X-T3 was full-frame, it might be almost good enough. doady:"I shoot 7.1MP. The Fujifilm GFX 50R is the last medium format by Fuji to utilize the same 51 MP CMOS sensor that we have previously seen on a number of cameras, including the Fuji GFX 50S, Hasselblad X1D 50C / X1D II 50C and Pentax 645Z. @Greg7579 I fully agree with your opinion about this review. Like every camera. 50R and a K1.Sounds like a bunch of great shots to me. APS-C and M43 body and lens size just keep seem to be growing to the point there isn't much space/size advantage against small full frame (Sony A7 III, Nikon Z6, Canon 6D II, EOS RP). So why are people buying FF and lenses and what not? But it is a medium format camera: Slow AF, large, heavy, "epensive". "I see. That remains to be seen.Pixeldensity of this 100MP sensor is comparable to the 24MP APS-C sized sensor. Getting the same depth-of-field is nearer a 2/3EV difference, by the way. Then I looked at both results using a XNView to simulate looking at a printed picture somewhat close. Yeah, that's what they say now. "The large viewfinder of the GFX50 was unusable for me because I couldn't see the corner of the frame unless using the back LCD, so I returned the GFX. As you can see, the sensor on the Fuji GFX 50R (just like on the GFX 50S, GFX 100, Pentax 645Z and the Hasselblad X1D 50c / X1D II 50c), is significantly smaller compared to the medium format sensor found on a camera like the Hasselblad H6D-100c. This specific sensor is old, the megapixel count isn't that high at all and it's not very indicative of what this MF format can produce, so there's a difference between it and FF but, especially with a FF that has a base ISO of 64, it's not that huge a difference. MF light= FF image quality. Combining a 37MP full-frame sensor, minimalist controls and Lightroom Mobile built in, it's a refreshing – if a bit quirky – take on the smartphone-meets-camera concept. I see people are complaining about this system not having fast enough lenses. Now, if many companies come together to harness the advantage of larger MF sensor, MF will definitely trump FF. The GFX 50R's sensor is excellent but so are those of its full-frame peers. I've been thinking getting either m4/3 or Fuji GFX but I haven't decided." The 50R does contain more information, no doubt. I can think of 4 things: 1) using adapted MF lenses, however due to the crop factor from 645 or 6x9 you might as well just use FF2) If you really just shoot 4:3 or 1:13) As a second body once the 100 MPx model comes out...4) If you're really, really bothered by the possibility of seeing PDAF banding (but there's D850 for that). I took one image from my D850 with 105mm F1.4 and one with GFX and 120mm. People who never used this camera will never know. Second and third areas I proposed I problably hadred to come by yet I think this could be approached from diffrent angle. I'm a FF shooter yet I think your test is unfair for MF. "I turned off NR and sharpening on both just to see what the sensor does"- Which is absolutely pointless. MF will be inferior in terms of AF, portability and price. Hmmm ... sensor size in pixels and file size are quite tightly coupled. But not everybody's got a last generation iMacPro, so for 90% of the people the three formats will be about the same quality. For those wondering about detail differences between 50MP MF and hi-res Nikon or Canon: Go the Fred Miranda site, check the pictures by Sculptormic at Medium Format Digital Images Thread to compare them any FF you know.. Read the review and there are lots of details about sharpness and things that can be seen on a screen, but none about print quality. It won't cover my whole screen. @Seragram what do you want next? Like, in a hurry means I stand and have 2 seconds to spare to take a shot. So essentially, its a good camera for taking photos of anything that is not birds or sports. A difference may be significant to one person and insignificant to another. It may not stand up to the logic of the forums, but I'm far more interested in a real pros opinion on such matter. Ignore it. For me, a Z7 (or equivalent) with a set of sharp primes will deliver similar single frame images , will cost less, easier to handle and be smaller to carry around. Find out how the GFX 50R performs in our full review. I wouldn’t shoot Nikon if they did go MF. Buy a Z7 pay less get more lenses superior AF and IBIS in a smaller kit. No reason we should obsess about its dimensions today in a whoolly different photographic environment. Plus AF precision and (customizable!) @Duncan M, Nikon and Sony offer 50mp MF camera’s? My camera will still focus on 2 seconds. Nice camera, but limited. GFX 50R Camera Body Firmware Update Ver.2.00. But, yeah, photographers - at least ones who are online a lot - are petty as hell and argue about the dumbest stuff. It is like trying to quantify one's wealth by counting things you don't have. For all other stuff I got the A7r3. There are a lot of photo/video cameras that have found a role as B-cameras on professional productions or A-camera for amateur and independent productions. Given the evolution of full frame sensor resolutions and auto-focus, the GFX50 is going to rapidly lose its edge. Really good. @Duncan M This is a 2013 sensor made by Sony, not even designed for mirrorless, but Fuji and Hasselblad tweaked it to work on mirrorless cameras. But in this specific case for me You forgot to understand what MF is great at - and that's not megapixels I think. Vaporware no more: the much-speculated-about Zeiss ZX1 has arrived. For me that would be probably 3 elements - 1. Absolutely correct. The Fuji GFX 50R is by no means a revolutionary camera, and it was never meant to be one. Sentons is pushing this technology further with CameraBar, tech it anticipates will be utilized in smartphones next year. Blurry backgrounds are artistically neutral, not an end in themselves. That mystical element unseen by the masses is called confirmation bias. I shoot Nikon because overall it's the best tool for me. This low bandwidth connection can either be used as a remote shutter release or as a way to more quickly establish a full Wi-Fi connection for image transfer. It's dynamic range great to demonstrate that FF has wide dynamic range. The best way to know is to try it. If the camera does everything what is your role and skill after all? "DoF is such that for any shot all in focus, the MF lens should be stopped down 1 stop over a FF lens, diffraction will rob some of the IQ potential of the MF sensor.". I'm not going to defend 50R but if think Your review is somehow flawed in it's comparison to FF. "...only 70% larger..."!?!?!? With my D810 or D850, I can grab it, point it, and shoot almost instantly. TETNO - the sunset city image is a very wide dynamic range scene and both the GFX and Z7 are showing similar amounts of noise in the shadow areas, which confirms the independent findings of DxO and Bill Claff that this sensor does not offer a significant dynamic range advantage over the Z7 and D850. Nevertheless in my work, the difference is definitely notable and all things considered well worth the jump from FF (which I still use) to DMF. The point is that the review (and common sense) proves out that the IQ is about the same as ANY modern FX camera. "So pretty much still life, pedestrians and landscapes" Hmmm, you forgot urban landscape, architecture and portraits. The second reason is AF speed indoors. For the first time ever, I'm consistently seeing images that reflect what I saw in the scene when pressing the shutter. Why bother? I had the opportunity to use the GFX 50R when it was released for a number of months while doing assignments in Uzbekistan in 2019, and although I really wanted to publish my review of this camera more than a year ago, I simply could not commit to it due to my busy schedule. APS-C can scrape by with a significant sacrifice of image quality at ISO 3200 and beyond. DPR should have a section on prints from the various comparators and the Fuji. Then why comparing gfx with FF bodies? By Vlad Savov @vladsavov Sep 26, 2018, 10:30am EDT The GFX 50R is a rangefinder style, which has been reborn through the history of medium format cameras. If I were to do a HDR shot, I'd use the 50R hands down. As the smallest lens in the lineup, we decided to see how it stacks up as a travel companion on some recent trips. As a neat little diffuser that has a gigantic impact on the quality of the light from a hotshoe flash unit, the Hähnel Lantern creates a dramatically wide spread of soft illumination. With damn near equal image quality done deal. For a Fuji X user who is looking after more image quality, the Fuji GFX can be an option, it will be costly , but the step up in image quality from xtrans will be justified. Better late than never, I guess! Key factors of IQ are: Lens quality and Sensor size and sensor generation. I use a point and shoot camera from 2004. The camera has incredible strengths for Street Photography, but nothing more than the image quality - the depth of colour and the tones are sensational. There's not necessarily a benefit in using 8192 values to characterise the brightest stop of data, vs using 2048, if there's lot of variance in the signal you're trying to encode. To think that the only way to achieve high image quality is by using a fast lens is just foolish. The priority has always been to achieve premium image quality. For them its clear ALL executives and engineers thus far are focused on APSC and MEDIUM format. These medium format sensors are barely larger than FF. It is rather typical for them to release a slightly altered body at an attractive price built around an outdated sensor. Honestly, they both look like crap and unusable that way.I don't care which one is a bit less of a crap. No. Fuji isn't diffraction limitted at f/8. That's why I decided to stick with the view finder of my FF camera. If in doubt, download the Raw and compare them. I've tried a GFX50R (rental), and it left me with mixed feelings. Learn about GF50mmF3.5 R LM WR; GF63mmF2.8 R WR . This is perhaps because the sensor used is very old. 12"x18" is fairly small print for a camera, apsc won't show limits at that kind of enlargement. After the GFX100 will be released by Fuji, we will see an increase of GFX50 for sale at discounted prices, it's just a matter of a year or so. So in contemporary standards, MF (Fuji) will be marginally better than FF (hardly noticeable) which is a bit more than marginally better than crop (slightly noticeable). I wouldn't hold my breath for this sensor. Fine art photographs taken in a “hurry” means nothing! We've set the Fujifilm to F10 and the Nikon to F8, meaning both are shooting with a roughly 4.5mm aperture diameter, giving the same depth-of-field. Any less than that, and the difference will only be discernible through pixel-peeping or close side-by-side comparisons. It's called SUCCESSFUL trolling.
